Letter from the Editor: February

Dear Reader,

Happy February! After three months of being away, The Summit is proud to be publishing our fourth print issue of the year and bringing you the latest news at Stonehill. While we have been busy publishing articles on our website, summitnews.org, it is always a treat when we publish our print issues and see them being read around campus.

One of the biggest pieces of news is the launch of the new digital media production major, set to begin next fall. As someone who will be graduating with a DMP minor, it is so exciting to see this program expanding and more opportunities being offered to students. Some of my most memorable college experiences have come from taking these DMP courses, and even if you are not majoring or minoring in that field, I can’t recommend enough taking one or two courses during your four years at Stonehill. The Video Marketing class with Professor Shannon is especially fun!

We have also been digging deeper into some topics we first reported on last semester, including the proposed basketball and ice hockey arena, the College’s path to university status, and improvements to the dining situation. The dining situation has been a particularly hot topic since Bon Appétit came to campus last year, with students complaining of long wait times, limited gluten-free options, and dining hall workers making rude comments to students. Luckily, it seems some of those issues have been addressed, and you can read about the changes implemented this semester in Maddi Achtyl’s and Audrey Sears’ articles.

There is also a lot of news occurring at the federal level, much of it revolving around Elon Musk’s influence and the administration’s executive orders. Admittedly, The Summit has a limited ability to provide comprehensive coverage of national developments, given our small staff size and the need to prioritize coverage of campus news and events. However, I encourage all students to take advantage of the library’s free subscriptions to the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. You can go to the library’s website to learn how to sign up and create an account. These outlets provide everything from breaking news and feature stories to reporting on sports, healthcare, science, and many other topics. Personally, I am quite a fan of the NYT cooking section, even though I have no idea how to cook!

On behalf of the staff, I hope you enjoy the February issue of The Summit. As always, feel free to contact us at thesummit@stonehill.edu or me directly at ctobin1@students.stonehill.edu with any questions, concerns, or tips on a story. Stay safe, Skyhawks!
