The women’s lacrosse team defeated Assumption College at W.B. Mason Stadium by one point in a final score of 10-9 on Saturday.

In the first half of the game, Lydia Rudden and Shannon Hughes scored the first set of goals for the Skyhawks. Rudden scored one unassisted goal, and Hughes scored one unassisted goal, one free position shot, and a goal assisted by Molly Mae Hughes.

Assumption scored four goals in the first half.

The second half landed six goals for Stonehill, and five goals for Assumption. Shannon Hughes scored another unassisted goal, making her the highest goal scorer for the team with four out of the ten goals.

Katie Julian scored a goal assisted by Emma Sullivan, who scored three goals in the second quarter, two of which were assisted by Molly Mae Hughes, and another by Shannon Hughes.

Molly Mae Hughes scored the final goal 21 minutes into the second half, this time unassisted, bringing the score to ten and breaking the nine-to-nine tie.

The head coach of the team, Katie Conover, said the team has set a goal to get better every week.

“Our individual skills are on point, but we have spent the last year avoiding contact to our team defense is getting a lot of love and attention lately,” she said.

The team’s first game was on March 17, but the team has been practicing since mid-February. Four games have been played; two have been wins.

Conover is an alum of Stonehill and said she was lucky to play on the team during her student years. She said she has a “personal” and “emotional” vested interest in the success of the program because of her experience.

“I love working with this team; they are a special group of kids that love each other through the fun days and support each other through the tough ones,” she said.

The Skyhawks will be back on W.B. Mason Stadium on Wednesday, April 7 matching up against Bentley University.
