Professor Tilley recognized for his excellence in teaching

By Madison Darmstadt

Professor Leon Tilley called receiving the Louise F. Hegarty Award for Excellence in Teaching at convocation last month “pretty overwhelming,” since the nomination came from the student body.

Known for his dedication and contagious energy, Tilley has earned recognition from both students and colleagues.

“He’s very passionate about what he’s teaching and genuinely wants his students to do well,” said Jill Miller a sophomore biology major.

Tilley said his continued passion is derived from each new group of students. He said that their fresh perspectives influence him to find new ways to teach.

“Every year is different, everybody is a person, and everyone has their own personality,” he said.

Miller, a student athlete, said Tilley is extremely accommodating. She said he is flexible with deadlines, offers make up opportunities, and ensures she understands material despite her demanding athletic schedule.

Senior, Emily Desrosiers, said Tilley goes above and beyond for his students. He would often extend office hours specifically to help her, she said.

“Professor Tilley taught me that putting in extra work and becoming comfortable with asking for help is a strength not a weakness,” said Desrosiers.

Tilley said he wants students to know that he has an open-door policy and prioritizes being available for them.

“Professors are here for you and here because of you, so take advantage of that,” he said.

Desrosiers highly recommends students take a class with Tilley.

“He creates a positive learning environment and will leave you with a stronger understanding and appreciation for the material,” she said.

Tilley said he hopes his students are able to find enjoyment and pride in “learning how to think things through and puzzle things out,” after leaving his classroom. He said this skill is not only important in chemistry, but life as well.
