After a 0-1-1 start to NEC play, Stonehill men’s soccer propelled themselves to sixth place in the standings after two back-to-back wins last week.
The Skyhawks got their first conference win last Thursday, shutting out the University of New Haven 1-0.
Stonehill owned the time of possession in the first half, 57% to 43%. They also outshot the Chargers 20 to 16.
Senior Shane Fonesca scored the lone goal just six minutes into the match. It was his third goal of the season.
From there, both teams traded shots on goal. Sophomore keeper Cade Likhite got his fourth start in net and made a total of 5 saves throughout the match. It was his first win and first shutout of the season.
The team’s momentum kept on rolling when they traveled to Mercyhurst University this past weekend for a mid-standings matchup.
It was sophomore Nate Monteiro who stunned the Lakers with a last-minute, game-winning goal that earned the Skyhawks a 3-2 victory.
That would be Monteiro’s second goal of the game. His first broke the 1-1 stalemate sixteen minutes into the second half.
This is the first brace of his career and brings him to three goals this season.
Sophomore James Forrest-Hay opened the scoring for the Skyhawks in the first half. He slotted in a blocked shot from junior Chris Hines.
Likhite earned his second straight win of the season, securing his first NEC Prime Performer Accolade.
Monteiro and Fonseca were also named Prime Performers of the week. Monteiro was also recognized as Co-Player of the Week.
The team heads into a bye week at 2-1-1 in NEC play.
