Roche Dining Commons is set for a major transformation this summer as part of a three-phase renovation project aimed at enhancing the dining experience for students, faculty, and staff.

The first phase took place during the summer, when updates were made to the servery to accommodate the new all-you-care-to-dine model and dining services provider, Bon Appétit.

The changes that are now seen in the Dining Commons include new signage, paint, and an improved dessert and waffle area.

Phase two of the renovation process is set to take place this summer. When students return for the fall semester, they can expect to find a new ceiling in the servery, new flooring throughout the space, and all new tables and chairs in both dining areas.

“Using a variety of styles, heights, and configurations, we are looking to create comfortable dining areas where students can not only enjoy a meal but be comfortable dining either as a single or in a group,” said Associate Vice President of Student Affairs Kevin Piskadlo.

Another significant change in the second phase of renovations is the addition of an oval-shaped salad bar, soup station, and dessert area in the link space. The former salad bar area will be temporarily repurposed until the final phase of renovations is completed.

Student feedback has been crucial in shaping these renovations. While minor updates have been made over the years, including chair and carpet replacements in 2012 and ceiling upgrades in 2020, this project represents the most significant in recent history.

“We wanted to create an updated dining space that matched the enhanced quality of food that Bon Appétit is delivering,” said Piskadlo.

The renovations will start once the spring semester concludes and be completed by the time students return to campus in August for the fall semester. The dining hall is expected to be fully operational when students return in August.

Joe Fellone from Facilities Management is the project manager. A campus committee is also working on the project in collaboration with design and architecture firm BKP Architects out of Philadelphia. The estimated cost of all three phases of the renovations is $3.0 - $3.5 million.

“Throughout the process, we have also worked closely with students to solicit feedback and gather ideas. The student-led Dining Services Committee and the Student Government Association have provided critical perspectives,” said Piskadlo.

Incorporating student feedback has been beneficial in ensuring that the renovations align with the needs and preferences of the campus community, creating a dining space that is both functional and welcoming.

Commons A will maintain its current layout to accommodate bingo and meetings, Piskadlo said.

In contrast, Commons B will have a redesigned setup featuring booth-style seating, high-top tables, and round tables for a more dynamic arrangement.

Piskadlo said that since phase 1 of the dining renovations, they have seen a positive effect on the number of students, faculty, and staff eating at the Commons. They hope to increase the positive effect through the completion of the other two phases.
