Barry writes her name into Stonehill swimming record books

By Emily Ciampa

Kristy Barry made history for the Stonehill Skyhawks at the Hannah Gibbons Invitational on September 28.

Barry, a senior, broke the program record in the 100-yard individual medley. Her record-setting performance is not only an incredible personal milestone but also a strong start to the Skyhawks’ season.

Barry’s final time of 1:00.85 surpassed the previous program best of 1:01.91 set by Barry’s former teammate Sydney Stockwell two ye ago.

“I think I did a double take when I first saw my time on the scoreboard,” Barry said. “Honestly, I wasn’t expecting to swim that fast this early in the season. It really hit me when I saw my teammates’ reactions, they were ecstatic, and Coach Matt Distler announced that I had broken the record while I was still in the water.”

The Hannah Gibbons Invitational was one of the team’s first major meets of the fall and Barry entered it focused on getting back into a competitive flow rather than chasing after records. Her success reflects how far she’s come from her first years at Stonehill.

“This race meant a lot to me because it gave me a new level of confidence and boosted my outlook on the rest of the season,” she said. “The reaction from my teammates made it even more special. I’m so grateful to be surrounded by such an energetic, supportive, and inspiring group of women.”

Barry said her mindset shifts and perspective were a leading factor in this major success. As a senior, she’s learned to value the experience as much as the results, good and bad.

“The biggest difference for me this season is definitely my mindset,” Barry explained. “I started off with a more positive and adaptable outlook, really focusing on being present, whether at practice, at meets, or during team events. I’m less focused on times and competition and more focused on embracing every moment and being part of such an incredible, uplifting team.”

Barry added that the team’s enthusiasm is what helps carry them through a long day of competition.

“Our energy was absolutely contagious,” she said. “Even as the meet went on and people started to tire out, our energy never faded. If anything, it only grew stronger. We have such a unique way of keeping each other motivated and feeding off one another’s excitement.”

Barry also credited Head Coach Matt Distler for his consistent encouragement and leadership.

“He’s helped me deepen my passion for swimming and develop a perspective that goes beyond just the sport,” Barry said. “He emphasizes growing as a person, not just as an athlete, and that’s something that’s had a lasting impact on me.”

As Barry and the Skyhawks look ahead to the rest of the season, her record-breaking swim sets a powerful tone for what’s to come. For Barry, it’s not just about the time on the board. It’s about finishing her senior year with pride, gratitude, and the team beside her every step of the way.
