Stonehill Women’s Swimming team competed in the second week of the Roger Williams University Virtual Meet Series, remaining in third place with a total of 203.5 points on March 27.
This is the team’s second time posting a third-place finish in the meet, as in week one, the team put up 168 points over 14 events.
The team has been competing virtually using the pool at the Old Colony YMCA in Taunton, Massachusetts.
“I am pleased with the way they swam,” head coach Caleb Potvin said. “I see the potential in each of them and the talent they have as well as the room for growth.”
Coach Potvin said going into the meet; freshman Syndey Stockwell was battling through some adversity dealing with soreness in her arms.
However, that did not stop the freshman captain from starting where she left off with a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:02.41. Stockwell won the 50-yard backstroke event back in week one.
In that same event, Stockwell was joined by sophomore Nika Sokolova, who finished eighth in a time of 1:07.66, freshman Morgan Gangi finishing twelfth in a time of 1:09.34, and sophomore Maggie Timmoney finishing seventeenth in a time of 1:22.03. These performances posted two top 10 and three top 15 performances for the Skyhawks in week two.
The Skyhawks saw another first-place finish from freshman Katie Keating in the 100-yard butterfly posting a time of 1:01.96. This was an improvement from week one as Keating finished sixth in the 50-yard butterfly.
Stockwell is not the only one on the team batting through adversity, as this season has been a hurdle for the entire team.
“I think they envisioned their first year to go very differently, but they have been able to weather each storm and climb over each obstacle with good determination, grit, and positivity,” Potvin said.
For Coach Potvin and all the athletes, this has been their first time competing virtually, but the team has lived up to the challenge so far.
“They do a great job staying focused, working hard at practice. Then when I check in with them the day of the meet, they are pretty locked in,” Potvin said.
The Skyhawks head into the final week of the virtual series this Saturday, April 10, looking to dominate their lanes and give it all they got.
“We have been getting tougher mentally as the meets have gone by, and now that we know where we stand for this last one, it’s going to be the final push where everyone gives their best effort,” Stockwell said.
