When Stonehill announced in the Monday Morning Update March 15 to be on the alert for a special announcement on May 13, it started a flurry of speculation on campus as to what it might be.
The email said “PSST… Love Stonehill? Care about our future? We have a special save-the-date invitation, and we ask you to mark May 13 on your calendar, when the College will make a bold announcement. Check out this video—and feel free to share with a classmate or friend!”
The video features a dramatic flyover of the campus and the quote: “If you love Stonehill, you’ll love the news we have to share. Be the first to hear an exciting announcement that will elevate our future.”
Some of the possibilities to what it may be range from practical to the wild and unlikely.
“I would hope that it’s a pool but I know it’s definitely something bigger,” Chloe Landry, a junior, said.
Kristen Thornton, a junior, said that those in her suite believe the college could be rebranding into a university or even merging with another school.
Ainslee Rodrigues, a junior, also suspects that Stonehill College will be transitioning to Stonehill University.
“Now that we have the school of business and the school of social sciences, I think that we’re able to be a university,” Rodrigues said.
Madison Bissonette, a junior, said she believes the announcement could be related to a lifting of campus restrictions for the 2021-2022 academic year.
“My advisor mentioned something to me about it actually. And I noticed that all of the courses listed for the fall are listed as in person,” said Bissonette.
Daniel Vasquez, a junior and an RA in the O’Hara Village, also believes the announcement could be related to the fall semester, but it could have something to do with a new campus building.
“Maybe it’s something that nobody knows like a new academic building or renovations to residence halls,” Vasquez said.
Samantha Conti, also a junior, thinks that a new building is very likely.
“I feel like new buildings are always a new attraction for college and they promoted the business building so much,” Conti said. “I also feel like I could be wrong because they just built the business building.”
Professor Heidi Sadler, an adjunct professor of writing, said the suspense is killing her.
“Since it is unlikely that Harry Styles is enrolling in the class of 2021....maybe Stonehill is adding another major or graduate program. Our school is such a vibrant place - it would be wonderful to see it grow,” Sadler said.
The college remains quiet on details. Until May 13, Stonehill students, faculty, and alumni will continue to speculate on the endless scenarios.
