Waka Flocka returns to Stonehill for energy-filled concert

By Maddi Achtyl

Waka Flocka Flame brought energy to Friday night's spring concert in the sports complex, marking his first return to campus since his original performance in 2016.

The doors opened at 7 p.m. and the concert started at 7:20 p.m. with a student DJ, John Techiera, followed by Knox at around 7:50 p.m. Waka Flocka then came on stage just before 9 p.m. and performed for about 40 minutes.

The crowd began to pack into the field house around 8:30 p.m., and lines began to form at the sports complex's front doors.

To ensure safety for everyone at the concert, campus police had handheld security wands, confiscated any outside beverages, and kicked out students who were in possession of alcohol under the legal drinking age.

During the concert, Waka sang in the audience with the students during a few different songs.

He also took pictures and videos with students' phones while he was performing. The crowd enjoyed the chance to interact with him on this level and made memories that will last a lifetime.

Near the end of his set, he performed the two songs most students were most excited for, “Round of Applause” and “No Hands.” The crowd went crazy as nearly everyone sang along, bringing the energy to its peak.

Despite the crowd's pushing and shoving at points, a handful of dance circles broke out during Waka’s performance.

“Honestly, the best spring concert I [have] been to in my 4 years!” posted one student on YikYak, an anonymous social media network for college students.

Some students said the beginning of Waka’s set didn’t bring a lot of energy like many anticipated it would, but that the performance picked up energy once he came into the crowd and performed his hit songs.
