Women's Softball captures their first conference win against Southern New Hampshire University.

It’s been a long time since the Stonehill softball team has been able to step back on the diamond and compete. Before the season was canceled in 2020, they seemed poised to have a successful year and were cut off with a two-game win streak and a 7-5 record overall.

This spring, they finally got back to playing as they traveled to Southern New Hampshire University this past weekend to compete in their first NE-10 play of the season.

“Being able to play in a conference game, especially for us seniors is something we’ve been hoping for over a year, so it was nice to come out with a win,” senior captain Hannah Ricker said.

The Skyhawks sealed their first conference win on the road, taking down SNHU in the first set of games, but SNHU took the second game of the afternoon.

The Skyhawks came out rolling in the first inning as seniors Michelle Theilgard and Julia Perrone cashed in hits and put a run on the board early. The team tallied in their scores early as sophomore Courtney Brochu singled, bringing home another two runs. The Skyhawks added to their lead, securing their first conference win of the season, beating SNHU by a final score of 5-4.

Ricker and the team fell just short of returning back home with two wins as SNHU sealed their first conference win with a 6-4 win over the Skyhawks in the last game of the weekend doubleheader. The Skyhawks hope to finish the sweep as they will meet the Penmen later in the season for another pair of games.

Although last season ended in a heartbreak fashion as the Skyhawks season was cut short due to the pandemic, head coach Ken LeGrice and the team are just happy they finally are back on the ball field.

“It’s so nice to get back out on the field as a whole team, especially since our season was unexpectedly cut short last year,” Ricker said.

The Skyhawks suffered two tough losses at home in a doubleheader against Bentley University. In the first game, the Skyhawks found themselves down early 4-0, but battled back with a two-run homer from senior Genna Hartman in the bottom of the first to close the gap to 4-3.

Freshman Marissa Dwyer hit her first collegiate home run for the Skyhawks to tie the game at four apiece in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Skyhawks would find themselves back in the game when Michelle Theilgard homered in the bottom of the seventh inning, but this would not be enough for the Skyhawks as they suffered a loss by a score of 8-6.

This would be the Falcons first win of the season and they would go on and take the second game by a score of 8-0 in five innings.

The Skyhawks head out of the break with a 2-6 record and look to improve as the season progresses.

“We’ve been working hard as a team in the little time we had to prepare for this season, and I’m really excited to see where we can go from here,” Ricker said.

The Skyhawks look to get those wins back as they face the Bentley Falcons for a second time in a doubleheader action on Wednesday, April 7 at 3:00 p.m. on Fr. Gartland Field.
