Stonehill College Mourns the Loss of Police Chief Rochelle Ryan
By Annie Renz
Police Chief Rochelle Ryan, the first woman to hold the post on campus, died, the college announced Friday.
President John Denning made the announcement in an email to the Stonehill community that Ryan, who graduated from Stonehill in 2018, had died. The cause of death was not disclosed in the email.
In his statement, Denning said he was saddened to share that the College learned the news earlier that morning.
He wrote, "Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends and colleagues. May their cherished memories of her offer them comfort during this difficult time."
"For more than 20 years, Chief Ryan served our campus community with distinction and an unwavering dedication to the well-being of students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the College. Her leadership demonstrated an approach to public safety defined by compassion and respect for all."
Ryan joined the Stonehill College Police Department in 2002. According to Stonehill's faculty directory, prior to serving as chief, Ryan held ranks of patrol officer, sergeant, staff sergeant, patrol lieutenant and investigations and civil rights officer.
She earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice in 2018 while working on the department.
"Her positive impact will continue to inspire us to lead with the same commitment to service that she exemplified throughout her life and career," Denning wrote.
He also wrote that the Chapel of Our Lady Sorrows in Donahue Hall will serve as a quiet space for reflection and that all are welcome to stop by and share a message in a book of remembrance.
The College will follow up with information about services honoring the late chief.
