OPINION: What a year!

The Summit

By Kailtlyn Simmons

When I first heard about the pandemic last March, did I think we would still be living in this world one year later? Not at all! I was looking forward to another semester back on campus in January 2020, as I had been abroad in the Fall of 2019, but when we were told that spring break was going to be extended, I knew then that something was wrong, and that this pandemic was not going away anytime soon.

Many changes needed to take place from being able to normally walk outside and hang out with friends to changing to talking to friends and loved ones masked up and six feet apart. At first, they felt so strange to take on, but now it’s second nature. My friends from back home and I were all so sad since we were all in one spot at the same time but not allowed to see one another. Obviously, we all were taking this pandemic seriously, so we would social distance hang out in the trunks of our cars in our high school parking lot, but it was not the same as it used to be.

I’m so grateful that we’ve been able to stay on campus this year, whereas some schools had to cut their semesters short or went fully online. Though Stonehill doesn’t look the same as a “normal” year, any sense of creating structure in my day is definitely needed! Even with all of the COVID safe changes we have had to readjust to, and also have a quick quarantine period, I am, again, so grateful that we have *knock on wood* successfully made it through the entire year!

A YouTuber that I follow has been daily vlogging all year long, and March 1st was the 1-year anniversary, which is so weird to think about! Remember when everyone was baking banana bread, or whipping their coffee in the KitchenAid mixers? Or when TikTok was just about to take the world by storm? What were you doing a year ago? Is there anything that you’ve learned from this whole experience that you’re going to continue doing once we’re finally in the clear?
