Making everyone's voices heard: Elections begin for SGA executive board

By Jay Ghiorse

Stonehill students, dressed in their best, strode into the Roche Commons Dining and took their seats.

One by one, the students’ names were called. They then walked up to the podium and pleaded their case to their fellow students on why they deserve a spot on the SGA Executive Board.

Speech after speech, common themes were expressed by the candidates. One of those themes was student involvement.

Candidate for vice president, Emma Afrah Tutu, ’26, said, “I will make sure every student knows how they can be involved on campus.”

Another candidate for vice president, Hayden Brown,’27, simply asked, “Have you ever thought about how you wish there were more events and clubs on campus?”

Sabrina Calderone, candidate for executive public relations chair, said one of the biggest reasons she wants to be a part of student government is “to increase awareness of important events.”

The candidates raised questions about student engagement and whether student voices are being heard.

Afrah Tutu centered her speech around “making everyone’s voices heard.”

Allie Calabro, ‘27, candidate for executive finance chair, echoed that sentiment. “I want to make sure students on campus know that they have a voice,” she said.

Aileen Ortiz, ’27, candidate for diversity executive chair, said “I hope students know that they have a voice.”

Hayden Brown said she had “spent an entire year working for the current vice president,” while Colin Ronayne,’26, candidate for executive treasurer, noted his dedication to his schoolwork and excelling in his field.

“These skills will help me succeed in a leadership role,” said Ronayne.

Voting for the SGA Executive Board positions begins March 3 and ends March 5. Students should check their email for more information on how to cast their votes.
