Larry Collins: A story of strength, resilience, and community support

By Danny Hurley

When facing life’s most challenging moments, it’s resilience and the support of loved ones that shine brightest.

That’s exactly what Larry Collins has shown after his recent diagnosis with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). A devoted father, husband, and friend, Larry’s strength throughout his journey has inspired not only his family but also the greater Stonehill College community.

Growing up in Massachusetts, Larry built a life centered around family, sports, and hard work.

He raised his children, including Paul Collins, a standout senior football player at Stonehill, to approach life with grit, humility, and gratitude.

“My dad has always been the toughest guy I know,” Collins said. "Seeing the way he faces each day motivates me and everyone around him.”

Even as ALS began to affect his physical abilities, Larry’s spirit remained unshaken, continuing to lead by example through courage and positivity.

Larry’s diagnosis, though devastating, has rallied the Stonehill community around the Collins family. From athletic teams to faculty and students, countless individuals have come together to show their support.

Reflecting on the response from friends and family, Larry said, “I am overwhelmed at the love, the support, the encouragement I’ve gotten through these three months. My family has been very strong, and I have a wealth of friends that really have stepped up.”

Inspired by Larry’s resilience, I launched my senior capstone project—Stonehill ALS Awareness—to honor Larry and raise awareness and funds for ALS research.

Part of the project includes the ALS Ice Bucket Long Snap Challenge, where Stonehill athletic teams participate in a fun, spirited competition to bring attention to the cause. This is about more than raising money; it’s about showing families like the Collins’ that they are not alone.

Larry’s words capture the true meaning of community and support.

“It shows through the pure sincerity of people, not only asking how I am doing once, ten, a hundred times, but everyone involved—and to me, that is what’s important. The love and support I have from everyone is tremendous and means the world to me and my family," he said.

Despite the challenges, Larry remains focused on the positives: family moments, laughter, and the connections that matter most.

His story is a reminder of the power of community and the importance of standing by those who face battles they never chose.

Through every pass, snap, and bucket of water, Larry’s strength continues to inspire, reminding us all that hope and determination are forces stronger than any diagnosis.
