On March 8, head coach of the Stonehill Baseball team Patrick Boen hit a major milestone: 600 career wins. The team secured the win when they beat Bloomfield College while in Florida with a final score of 17-6.
Even though Boen is in his 25th season at Stonehill, he has been a Skyhawk since 1986. He is an alumni of the baseball team as a shortstop, and also the basketball team where he was the starting point guard leading the team to a Northeast-10 title in 1989.
Throughout his 25 seasons at Stonehill, he has acquired several accolades such as being a three-time NE-10 Coach of the Year, making two NCAA tournament appearances, being NE-10 tournament champion in 2010, and winning 20 or more games every season except for two.
This is the second major milestone of his career as he coached 1,000 games in April of 2019. He is one of the three active coaches to do this, joining Bentley’s Bob DeFelice and Rick Giannetti from Dominican College.
Boen said that his past 25 years coaching the team have been “exciting” and “enjoyable,” and when he thinks of Stonehill baseball, he thinks of all the players and families who are and have been a part of the team.
“Stonehill is a very special place and we have had great players and families, and I have been honored to coach that many years and victories,” he said.
The team had a fairly successful trip in Florida where they played 11 games across 11 days coming home with the record 5-6. With the game at Lynn University, the team was all smiles as Coach Boen hit the landmark win over Bloomfield.
Sophomore pitcher Logan Lawrence said he was proud to watch his coach receive such an honor.
“Having him as a coach for the past couple of years playing was awesome because of the opportunities he provided to me on and off the field,” Lawrence said.
Regardless of the wins, Lawrence said that Boen is more than just a baseball coach.
“He’s very good about maintaining a balance between wanting to win and bettering us as not only players, but as men coming up in the world,” he said.
For the 2022 season, the team has a current record of 12-16 and with Coach Boen leading the team, a successful season is on the horizon.
