Expectations and Conspiracy Theories Surround the Eclipse

BY CALEB TOBIN AND OLIVIA PUPPOLO

Stonehill students planning to watch the 2024 solar eclipse say they are excited for the historic opportunity. While that excitement spread rapidly, so have the conspiracies surrounding the 2024 solar eclipse.

The different theories involving the eclipse have spread rapidly through social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and X, formally known as Twitter.

“I’ve heard theories saying that we’re going to be set back in time,” said Helen Cotrupi, a junior.

Some theories saying that it will cause three to five days of darkness. Another theory in a USA Today article says NASA will be launching three rockets during the eclipse as part of a “sex magic ritual.”

Others are saying that the solar eclipse, combined with a recent earthquake, are a sign to repent.

“God is sending America strong signs to tell us to repent. Earthquakes and eclipses and many more things to come. I pray that our country listens,” said Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene on X.

But the conspiracies haven’t put a damper on those who planned to watch the eclipse.

“I’m excited for the experience,” said Cotrupi. Cotrupi planned on watching the eclipse and said she got a pair of protective glasses.

Jon Cook, also a junior, said he is happy that the weather is nice and that there are minimal clouds in the sky.

“There aren’t a ton of clouds, so it should be a good time,” Cook said.
